Mallard Decoys- $130 each
Mallards are the most common puddle duck on the coastal rivers where we hunt in Maine.
They nest locally near ponds, streams or on small marshes. Many of our lakes have families of
mallards that become quite tame during the Summer and live off of handouts, but when the
leaves start to fall their attitude changes and they become very wary and difficult to hunt.
As our mallards are mostly non-migratory we don't get large influxes of "new birds", however
inland birds head to our tidal rivers when the inland freeze-up occurs in December. These
birds are decoy shy and call shy. We have found that good (cork) duck hunting decoys
(several dozen), a good blind made from switch grass and realistic calling are needed for
consistent success.
Keys to success when hunting mallards-
- Hunt were mallards want to be- avoid areas that ducks also avoid, for whatever the reason.
- Use a good blind- layout or standup- if you aren’t invisible, comfortable and in a blind that blends
with the surroundings you won’t kill many mallards.
- Learn to sound like ducks- mallards love a good duck caller! Learn to sound like ducks and you
will double your hunting enjoyment and success.
- Decoys, decoys, decoys- if you hunt open water or marshes your decoys will add to your success.
I prefer lots of handmade cork or wooden hunting decoys for several reasons: they ride the water
like ducks, they are quiet in a chop (no plastic decoy slap!), and they are a pleasure to hold and
own!
